So many choices!

I understand cure poison and curses are a must, true healing too, but others levels, I do not know! Walk on water for those pesky water levels, fire aura to avoid lava (it does, doesn't it?)

And on higher levels I am truly lost, as most are damaging spells, and my spellpower is usually low. Maybe I should stop at dispel curses?

Also, I got low mana on my skill set, and it is troublesome

Help, please! :lol:

I think with Free Magic nothing is a must. It all depends on your other skills and flaws. I assume you have no other schools of magic and use normal combat instead. Otherwise I would suggest NOT to have low mana and low spellpower to boot.
Hybrid builds are the most difficult to pull off.

Aside from true healing, healing spells and curse/poison reduction also need spellpower. You can also use the "heal X on others" spells instead. Those work on yourself too and might be more convenient in regards to the circle they are on.

Oh, and Aura of Fire does not help against lava. It only hits monsters that attack in melee with fire damage and instantly removes ice blocks. Breath of Winter will help against lava, as does Fire Shield or flying.

Ah yes, I ment fire shield.

I am trying both ranged and melee with lots of survival skills and pick locks, trap lore...

Those help at first but at higher level I need morr raw power.
Also I find I miss spells a lot, dunno if I should take natural magic to avoid investing in sp

Looks to me like too much of a jack of all trades. If you use trap lore for the traps, you don't need magic for that. If you try to do everything, you end up doing nothing really good. You'll require high values for ALL stats instaed of few.

Use either archery or melee, not both. The only magic that is good "on the side" is spell songs and alchemy. A good skill combination needs lots of synergy.

If you like using magic, then BE a mage: use earth magic or basic magic for trap removal instead of trap lore for example. That will allow you to put points into spell power instead of perception (which you need for trap lore to work). Also mages don't use lock picking , they use the open spell or simply disintegrate the obstacle.
Or they use teleport spells to get where they want to.
With higher spell power, you can also use spells to kill monsters of course thus no need for melee or archery skills.
My mage builds always use one of the mana granting gods and mystic attack. Mystic is good during the early stage where mana can run out quickly.

Unlike table top RPGs, rogue likes encourage min-maxing - ours does at least :P.
If a skill combination feels like cheesing the game, it might be just about right.

Ah no, I meant I am trying a ranged build with free magic and a melee build with free magic.

But Yeah I like to have my bases covered. Pick locks, trap lore danger sense, together with cartography make navigating the labyrinth so much easier.

I started taking free magic because I always died of hunger or poison or drowning. Feather fall, portal or lava to rock. Along with curr poison and true healing are great for survival.

Pure mage builds just don’t seem viable at all. At level 10 or so all sort of sorcerers drain my mana it’s so frustrating!

Maybe there are so many skills I want to pick, that I am forced to grab too many weaknesses as well, leaving my char exposed...

My mages usually have high magic and thus magic protection spell available. Counterspell should provide good protection too. Both require spell power to be effective though. As can sending a summoned creature ahead: my golem does not care about mana drain...

Anyway. don't get disheartened if you don't make it through. That is supposed to be the normal case. Winning a rogue-like is usually the exception. The actual release of Lost Labyrinth has only 4 "survivors" listed in the online high score after all.
